Snowmobile Repair: 1995 Pantera ECU, arctic cat dealer, rich mixture

Question
Hi Arcticatman,

On the ECU on a 1995 Pantera the manual says there should be a single red flash on the ECU box to indicate it is working properly.  Mine has no flash.  If I disconnect one of the sensors I get the trouble code flashed on the box.  The machine starts well, just makes a lot of blue smoke.  I checked the oil pump and it is adjusted OK.  I replaced the pistons and rings.  Just wondering if the ECU is not working properly.  Is there a place I can get it Bench tested or buy a rebuilt one.

Also the manual says the fuel pressure should be max 36.2psi.  Mine is reading 38.5psi.  Would this cause a rich mixture.

Thanks

Vijay

Answer
Hello Vijay,

Sorry I wasn't able to get back to you sooner. It sounds like your best bet would be to have the ECU tested at your Arctic Cat dealer, as it sounds like it needs to be reset/reprogrammed. It may need replacing, but getting a new one can cost over 1000, as you probably know. Most dealers will generally charge a flat fee of about 50 dollars to diagnose your ECU. Al's has a few used ones here; http://www.alssnowmo.com/PRODUCTPARTS.ASPX?pn_deptid=283 . . Some maybe interchangeable with your sled, so it wouldn't hurt to give them a call. Ebay is another place to look for one. I think a good place to start, though, would be getting it tested, as I doubt it is ruined. Also, check to make sure none of the wire plugs are loose on the sled. I wouldn't worry about the fuel pressure, one you have the ECU replaced. It is most probably being caused by that. The reason for the smoke would be the extra fuel. Hope this helps, let me know if I can help with any other questions you might have. Good luck with the Cat! --Arcticatman
