Snowmobile Repair: I have a 440 Kawasaki snowmobile..., snowmobile engine, spark plug

Question
I have a 440 Kawasaki snowmobile engine I got about six years ago completely rebuilt and has been outside for the past two years  but never fired up. When I did try it, there was no spark. What's the matter? It is mounted upside down on my ultralight.  Thanks    S.G.

Answer
Hello Sean,

I've had the same problem, and it's generally caused by deteration of the electrical parts from being stored out doors. If you let me know what your model number or serial is on the engine I can give you more specific information, but here's a few ideas. Try replacing the spark plug with a new one first, just to eliminate it as a possible problem. I'm not sure if you have a point type ignition system, but if you do, I would recomend giving them a check, They're pretty cheap so it's usually best to just go ahead and replace them. Good quality ignition parts are availible at www.mfgsupply.com and www.denniskirk.com . If you have a C.D.I type ignition, try taking it to your local dealer for testing. Also, you may want to have the coil(s) tested, unless they have obvious physical damage or have craked wires. It sounds like you're using the engine to power your ultralight(?) I hope you have good luck, I know it wouldn't be too good if the engines ignition failed when you're in the air! Good luck with the engine, and let me know if I can answer any other questions you might have. Mr. W
