Steering Column Repair: Lock Cylinder not moving the actuator rode properly, chevrolet astro van, steering column repair

Question
1994 Chevrolet Astro Van with tilt-wheel steering column. The key lock cylinder cannot go back into accessories and when you turn the key to start the vehicle nothing happens. If I start the van by pulling the actuator rod I can cut it off by turning the key back, but it wont start. What could be the problem?

Answer
Hello Joette:
Sorry about your truck.  The problem is the ignition actuator rack gear has broken.  Here is  link to the part.  The end that looks like a bottle opener has broken and is no longer capable of pulling the rod to start the truck.  Pushing it back to shut it off though, is still intact.

To replace it you will need to partially disassemble the column all the way down to and including removing the tilt housing.  We have instructional video (or PDF with pictures) here.  You need videos 1, 2 & 3 to disassemble and 9, 11 & 12, to reassemble. (@--$6.95 ea)

I would suggest you take a look at the repair procedures before you buy any parts if you are thinking about doing it yourself.  If so, you will also need a special tool to get the tilt housing off.  Here is a link to that tool as well.

All in all, you are probably looking at about $50-$100 to do it yourself.  To have  shop do it would run closer to $200 if they know how.  Most will want to change the column and I would not recommend that.  That brings with it a whole new set of unrelated problems, like airbag, turn signals, wiper, etc that are fine on your truck.
I hope this helps.

Good luck
