Steering Column Repair: Upper Steering column Replacement, upper column, tilt column

Question
QUESTION: Dear Doug

I recently was the vicitm of an attempted theft. The would be thieves destroyed my ingnition lock housing while removing the cylinder and being that its not a serviceable part, I have to replace the entire upper column. I have already purchased and rekeyed a new cylinder but now I have to do the big replacement and have no idea where to start. I really cant afford to pay someone to do it and am quite handy when required. Was wondering if you could provide a diagram or synopsis of what I am up against. Thanks in advance.

Answer
OK Jon:

That makes it a lot easier to discuss.  Thanks
As I suggested, check out the exploded view of the column here on our website.

Your job is actually fairly easy.  The most important part of this is to ensure the airbag system is not affected.
Set the wheels straight ahead.  Then remove the airbag, steering wheel and all the electrical components on the column (clockspring, switches, etc.)
Then you can maneuver the steering wheel to access and disconnect the steering coupler, the shifter and finally the 4 bolts securing it to the column.
Swap the old column for the new one, and reinstall all the hard parts. (bolts and cables)
Then when it is installed, make sure the wheels are back to straight ahead before you install the electrical parts.
Once you are sure the wheels are pointed straight again, everything should line up and you can install the clockspring (just as it came off and the switches.

Lastly, if you had an immobilizer (and a gray key) you will need to replace that with a new one.  A used one cannot be reprogrammed to your old key.  You have to start fresh.  If yo have a black key or a plain metal key, then you have nothing to worry about.
I hope this all helps

Good luck
Doug
