Steering Column Repair: Steering Wheel Wear, ford steering column, steering wheel

Question
Hi Doug,

I have a 95 F-250 460 v8 4x4 single cab that I love. Its a real gem. The height of the truck has had me have to add side steps to climb and I try not to hang on to the wheel to slide in. The previous owner did so and I suspect from what a friend says that the steering column is making a crackling kind of spring sound and is starting to wobble a little. It sounds like what you said about in another post and I have to ask if you think that might be the case with mine too. How would i take off the steering wheel to look at it? With that said, I have a larger type of steering wheel (Over 14") and when I wear heavy jackets its hard to steer a little. Could I get a smaller steering wheel and would that change the driving. Thanks Doug. Craig H, Carlton, OR

Hi Craig:

It sounds like the bearing have gone bad in the upper end of the Column.  These are replaceable.
We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 2000 Mustang, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing also)
