Steering Column Repair: New problem after fixing another, turn signal switch, chevrolet silverado

Question
In my last question to you, I explained that I was having issues with the right turn signal and brake lights not functioning after I replaced the turn signal and windsheild wiper switches in my 1990 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. The problem was that the turn signal switch wiring harness was not completely connected. This weekend, I again pulled everything out of the column again to tighten the four bolts that were causing the steering wheel to be loose. I put everything back together, started the engine, put the automatic trans in reverse to back out. As soon as I put the trans in overdrive first drive position) position, the engine shut off. I tried it several times again with the same result the engine shuts off as soon as I put it it in the the first drive position` from the left. Is there some place in the column where
the shift lever interacts with the key cylinder/sector mechanism? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Answer

Housing w/ actuator ro
Hi Art:
The only thing I can think of is the actuator rod is not in position properly.  I am enclosing a picture of the part (the housing you tightened) with the groove in it where the actuator rod needs to sit.  When you reassemble it, did you put the rod back into the groove and then slide the semi-circular part of the rack gear over it?  These parts need to slide in the groove.  If it's outside of it, the shift selector bowl will grab and move it when you shift, thus shutting off the engine.
That's all I can think of that might have changed...but it means you have to tear it down yet again
Good luck
