Steering Column Repair: 2001 silverado ignition cylinder housing, steering column repair, torx bolts

Question
QUESTION: I am attempting to change my ignition cylinder housing on my silverado.  I removed the airbag, steering wheel, ignition switch, and airbag clockspring however there is one more part that is in the way of the screws for the housing.  Its a round green plastic part with a metal piece in front of it holding it to the shaft.  any ideals on how I can remove it.  Its a tilt column for 2001 silverado 2500.

ANSWER: Hi Demarest:

Good job so far.  You do not need to go any further down to replace the upper housing.  there are 3 30 torx bolts that secure it to the column itself.  2 of these are facing the driver and you can access them now without removing the horn cancel cam (that's the part you are talking about).  The 3rd bolt comes in form the side where the key is.  Once you remove those bolts, the housing will come off.

We do not have any instructions for this part change, but feel free to review our site for other instructions you may need

QUESTION: Thanks.  There was a snap ring I needed to takeoff.  I have everything assemble and try to program it.  Didnt work and my new key is struck.  I know it have something to do with security.  Is there any way to bypass this or program it.

Answer
The key is prevented from turning back by the black plastic cable that you needed to switch over.  It locks the shifter (if it's an automatic).  Most often that cable is not seated properly.  You have to install the cable with the lock cylinder in the ACC position (all the way back) or it will not go in all the way--and you could break it.
Regarding the programming, we have that procedure on our website for you (for a small fee).

Without a scan tool, it can take up to 1/2 hour to do it properly.  Make sure the battery is fully charged before you start.
