Steering Column Repair: Wipers, jeep yj, windshield wiper switch

Question
I have a 1992 Jeep YJ Islander.  The windshield wiper switch has been crapping out for awhile.  Up till now I have been able to get them to work by tilting the wheel up and down until it caught but now I can't get it to work at all. They have stopped working when something in the steering column is used like the ignition or the horn.  Also, the low speed on the wipers hasn't worked in a long time, just the intermittent and the high speed.  Also, the high beam setting turns the headlights off, so there is alot going on with that wand. Is there anything I can do without tearing into the steering column, which is more complicated then I am comfortable with.

Answer

dimmer switch
Hi Erik:

It sounds like you have a few problems in the column.  The easy one is the adjustment for the hi-low beam headlights.  That's on the bottom of the column (outside the column) near your ankles.  A simple adjustment of that switch and rod will give you back that function.  As for the wipers, it sounds like a bad wiper switch.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.
