Steering Column Repair: 85 pontiac grand prix hi/low beam not working, turn signal switch, pontiac grand prix

Question
hi,
I have a 1985 pontiac grand prix tilt wheel cruise control and the headlights and turn signals work but my high beams wont turn off when i pull the lever towards me. would that be the dimmer switch bad? if so is it below the steeting column or do i have to take the steering wheel off to get to it?

Answer

turn signal switch
HI JR,

Very common problem.  the contacts in the turns signal switch get burned inside.  You may have seen a trickle of white smoke some time ago.  When you pull the lever towards you, you are actually forcing the contacts in the switch to make better contact.  You will need to replace the turn signal switch.
the switch costs anywhere form $35-$100 depending on where you buy it and yes, you do have to disassemble the upper end of the column to replace this.
You do not need a new column & I would highly recommend against that.  You would only be buying more problems with a column you now nothing about.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a Chevrolet truck, the column is failry similar to yours.
