Steering Column Repair: return spring for gear selector, needle nose pliers, chevy c1500

Question
94 chevy c1500 with tilt, no air bag.

The return spring on my gear selector lever has broke.  How complicated is replacement for this spring....Everything works fine, but I am afraid the spring will fall and end up cause more problems down the road.

Answer

shift lever spring
Hi Alan:
I think by the 'return spring' you mean the spring that give the lever itself tension to retain the gear position selected.  If this is true, I have enclosed a picture of the spring.

To replace it, just remove the pivot pin on the shift lever.  With a needle nose pliers or pick, remove what's left of the old spring.  Then you can install the new one.  The only thing you need to be careful of is dropping the spring inside the shift bowl.  I use a right angle pick to set it in place and then a small flat blade screwdriver to push it down into the hole and onto the retaining pin.  Once there, angle the shift lever so as not to disturb the setting and then align the lever to put the pivot pin back in place.  Carefully this can be done within a couple of minutes.  If you drop it, it will most likely not cause any problem (I once dropped 3 inside the bowl) because it's low enough on the column, there is nothing serious it can jam.  Ultimately it will fall out on the floor.

Lastly, if you need to buy a spring, we sell them through our website.
