Steering Column Repair: loose shift lever 94 suburban, flat blade, spring tension

Question
The shift lever in my 94 1/2 to GMC 4WD suburban has lost the spring tension that typically exists when you pull the lever forward.

Upon checking with the local dealers I found the spring that causes this tension.  But now one at the local dealers could or would tell me how to replace it.

Years ago I had the same problem on another vehicle.  The best I remember I just removed the pivot pin on the shift lever and was able to get to the spring.  Not sure of the right approach on the 94 GMC.

Can you help with this?  Perhaps a diagram?

Thanks

Answer

GM shift lever tension
Hi David:
The assumptions and procedure you mention are all correct for that vehicle.  The only thing you need t be careful of is dropping the spring inside the shift bowl.  I use a right angle pick to set it in place and then a small flat blade screwdriver to push it down into the hole.  Once there, angle the shift lever so as not to disturb the setting and then align the lever to put the pin back in place.  Carefully this can be done within a couple of minutes.  If you drop it, you may be in for a long haul.

Good luck
Doug
