Steering Column Repair: 70-72 GMC steering column, turn signal switch, tilt column

Question
QUESTION: Hi, could you send me a exploded view of the column. I took it apart to replace the pointer but can't remember how it goes back together. If no drawing is available can you at least "list" the parts from the bearings in the upper collar up to the steering wheel nut.

ANSWER: Hi Lester:
Please let me know if it is a tilt or non-tilt column, standard or automatic, floor or column shift...then I can help you. (Year make & model would be nice too)

Thanks
Doug

QUESTION: Doug, oh, silly me, I forgot the most important stuff..
The column is tilt, keyless, automatic, column shift.
Sorry I forgot,
Les

ANSWER: Hi Les:

thanks for the info.  I think this is what you need to see to fix your car.  I don't have any photos or details for the classics, but they haven't changed that much.  See if this is what you need.  If yours is truly 'keyless' (no ignition lock in the column), then much of the key information does not pertain to you.  Just click on this link (or cut & paste)

QUESTION: Doug,
Sorry but no. Been there already lookin' for my answer. The problem is the 70-72 column's were somewhat different animals. Where the one in "carcraft" has the top steel plate that is compressed and released by the ring, mine doesn't have that. From the area where the wheel nut is down, it's a larger dia. threaded down about 1"-1 1/2". There are two small race like pieces, a thin nut, a spring that is about 1/2 the size of a valve spring then the turn signal canceler and the turn signal switch. I believe they go together in that order but not sure.
?????

Answer
Les:
It sounds like the column may be from an earlier design and installed in this truck.  I think I have an answer for you but it's too large to post here.
Send me an email through my company website & I can forward the picture and detailed description to you
