Steering Column Repair: Steering wheel lock, steering wheel locks, jeep grand cherokee

Question
I am interested in removeing or disableing the steerig wheel locking locking mechinisum on my 1998 jeep grand cherokee if it posible to do. This a towed vehickel behind my motor home and the steering has jumped into a locked position twice after tuning tight corner. The other reason is the key has to be left in the on position to be towed and it runs the battery down after a couple days.

Answer

The Club
Hi Ron:

There is no short answer to your question.
The locking mechanism can be removed, but it takes a qualified mechanic ("A" level technician) to remove the ignition mechanism, lock cylinder and ignition switch, remove the steering shaft locking pawl and spring mechanism, and then reassemble the actuator and gears to align in the lock and switch properly. These are parts that are fairly fragile, unavailable from Jeep if they break and require special tools to remove and service.
So I guess, my suggestion to you would be to disconnect the battery, purchase a "Club" that goes from the brake pedal to the steering wheel and tow the vehicle with the ignition on, battery disconnected and steering wheel secured by the "Club".
I'll attach a picture of the club if you are unfamiliar with that design.  Here is the link to the website of the manufacturer also--it's a little long

I hope this helps you  (even a little)

Good luck
