Steering Column Repair: 1998 Pontiac Grand Am Replace Steering Column, pontiac grand am, initial answer

Question
Hello, so I bought a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am that had the ignition ripped out, it was all legal and I have the title, and I have tried several routes to replace it. I bought a new ignition and when the guy tried to put it in he broke the actuator, so I bought that, then decided to have someone who knows more about it replace it. He said to return the ignition and buy a new steering column. So I did but got stuck with the actuator because it was special order. Now I find out, after it has been installed that I bought the wrong column, it did not have power steering and the car does. My question is this, since it's only the ignition that is messed up would it be possible to remove the components from the new steering column and put them on the old one? Or is there any way to make the new column accept the power steering thing?

Answer
Hi Rhianna:

When you say the 'ignition was ripped out", I'm not quite sure what they broke or damaged.  It's also hard to determine what the problem is between the 2 columns.  My initial answer to you is, yes, the parts you need to rebuild your column can most likely come from the column you purchased, but without seeing either of them, I can't be sure.
If you would like to send pictures of them to me directly so I can compare them and see the damage, I'd be glad to respond in person.  Phone pictures should be ok as well.
My company direct email address is dgan@stolenandrecovered.com

Lastly, if no one can help you, we certainly can.  Shipping a steering column (without the steering wheel) is fairly inexpensive ($25 or so UPS) and we would be more than happy to rebuild it for you.  With the pictures, we can give you a pretty close estimate.
