Steering Column Repair: steering tilt knuckle, turn signal switch, lock cylinder


Question
ignition switch broke in father inlaws car 93 buick limited he has taken off the steering wheel and undone the turn signal switch lever.  he does not know how to take off the tilt knuckle? it tilts on two sleeves one on each side both have threaded holes what do we do??

Hi Justin:
If it is indeed the ignition switch (electrical part), then you are going in the wrong direction.  The switch is located on the lower half of the steering column about ankle high and mounted to the exterior of the column. There is no need to go down the center.
If it is the lock cylinder, then you have gone too far.  Yuo don't need to remove the tilt housing as the lock cylinder is already in your hand.
My guess is that the problem is the rack gear or rack actuator rod that broke.  These parts are the linkage that connect the lock and rotating black gear to the ignition switch.  These parts require the full overhaul as you are proceeding.
