Steering Column Repair: Ignition Switch, steering column, firebird

Question
I have a 69 Firebird that recently have a brand new steering column installed. Now when I put it into park and go to turn it off the ignition switch is not setting all the way back into place. It stops halfway and will not let me remove the key. I have tried keeping my foot on the brake and shifting from neutral back into park but that does not seem to help. Any advice would be helpful!! Thanks

Answer
Hi Brandi:
The 69 Firebird has a rod and linkage that runs from the transmission to the steering column.  It moves the lower bowl as you shift the tranny on the floor (watch it).  If that rod is not attached or adjusted correctly you will not be able to get the key out every time.

If it is not moving, it's probably not hooked up.  Then, simply try to rotate the lower bowl on the column counterclockwise and you should be able to release the key.  If it is moving, then it needs to be adjusted so the bowl moves to the extreme when it's in Park.

I hope this helps you
