Steering Column Repair: 78 Vette Steering Column, 78 corvette, mechanical linkage

Question
Last time out it worked, went to start my 78 Corvette with tilt telescopic column, and the key will not turn enough to engage the starter position. I can turn it the other way to get the accessories position, took the column apart to investigate, cannot find the problem from the top side. going to remove the whole column to investigate further, what do you suggest it might be? Ignition turns fine out of the column. I'm thinking it might be in the lower end which I haven't had apart yet???

Answer

gm ignition switch
Hi Mike:
boy, I'd do everything I could before taking the column OUT.  That's just more work that you don;t need.  the problem is either the lock cylinder (which you say works fine), the ignition switch mounted to the exterior of the column just above your ankles  (on the top side of the column), or the linkage between.
I would check components in that order.  My next step would be to lower the column so I could get the ignition switch out and in my hand to check.  I've attached a picture so you know what you are looking to remove and check.
If that works fine, then the problem is in the mechanical linkage inside the column between the two (rack gear, actuator or rod).   Once in a a while, we see the preload spring that locks the column break and jam the gears preventing it from rotating properly.  If your steering does not lock anymore, that's a good indicator and it's a repair done in the car just a little further than you've gone.
We have video to show you how to do that on the website. Here is the link:
