Steering Column Repair: power steering column on malibu, power steering rack, reputable repair shop

Question
I found a 2007 Malibu with only 29,000 miles for sale by a reputable local
dealership.  I read report on what has been fixed on car.  It said the power
steering column had been replaced.  What would cause this to happen?
Once fixed, what are the chances the car will ever drive right again or this
problem happen again?  The carfax showed no indication that it had been
wrecked.  This car was to be for our son and wanted to last for at least 6
years.  Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Cely:
It kind of difficult to assess the value of a car over the internet.

Regarding the steering column, that too sounds a little strange.  You see, there are multiple parts to the steering system, tweo of the being the steering column and the power steering rack and pinion assembly, but usually no one ever calls the steering column a 'power steering column'. There is no power steering in the column of a 2007 Malibu, the power assist is in the rack and pinion assembly under the vehicle.  So I'm not even sure if we're talking about the same parts here.

I would suggest you take the vehicle to another reputable repair shop, pay them a fee to check out the car and then you will have an independent professional opinion of how good the car is and will be for you and your son.
I hope this helps you
Good luck
Doug
