Steering Column Repair: column, sterring wheel, chevy 1500


Question
ive got a 92 chevy 1500 pick up the problem is when i drive down the road the truck will loose power and stall if i floor it it will stay running but the motor wants to crap out and it will go maybe 5 miles an hr now the strange part is if i hit the steering wheel in the upper left sometime easy sometime really hard the motor jumps back to life and runs normal and some time i don't have to hit the wheel it will just fix itself its not a tilt ive take the column apart and cant seem to fined out y and it only works hitting the sterring wheel i can hit the column and nothing im thinking theres something next to the shaft in the column thats hitting something so any help would be great

Hi Gary:
The problem you are having is not in the steering column itself.  The only possible connection might be a bad or burned connection at the ignition switch itself which is mounted on the top of the column near your ankles.
A bad connection there might cause the engine to cut off, but nothing in the column controls how much power you have or is affected by the gas pedal.  That is engine related
I am enclosing a picture of the ignition switch so you can see what I am referring to.
