Steering Column Repair: cyliner lock, column shift, monte carlo


Question
I installed a column in A 70 Monte and the key works
backwards to the proper way and can't remove key is it the
locking rod ,, it seems to go opposite of the one in there
it was a column shift replaced it with a console column

Hi Kevin:
I'm thinking you didn't use a Monte Carlo column when you installed the replacement.  If you did (or you think you did) it shouldn't cause these problems.  The only difference between the 2 Monte Carlo columns is the shift bowl, nothing electrical or linkage is different.
There are though, other console columns (like a Chrysler and older GM's) that look similar but do push instead of pull and have the switches doing opposite things.

If you are interested in rebuilding the original and changing the shift bowl to a console style (without the lever or bump on it) we have that part and a video on our website to show you how to change it.
