Steering Column Repair: Ignition actuator rod, turn signal switch, pivot pins

Question
Hi,

I have a 1995 Mustang GT and i am pretty sure the actuator rod has broken as i can't turn the engine off and the ignition switch and barrel have already been replaced. The problem i am facing is acquiring a new actuator rod, do you have any idea where i might find one?

Thank you for any feed back :)

Hi David:
It sounds like your assumption is probably correct.  This is a fairly common problem and popular part replacement for that design.  The plastic actuator has a small steel pin that falls out of place.

The airbag, the steering wheel, both covers, the clockspring, the turn signal switch,  the lock cylinder, the actuator gears inside the lock housing, the tilt housing spring, the pivot pins and then the tilt housing (cancel plastic, snap ring, spring and upper bearings retainers) all have to come apart to access this gear.  Once it's apart, the new part needs to be shaved to fit properly.  To assemble, the lock cylinder gears need to be realigned exactly to hit all the key positions and the spring on the shaft needs to be pressed on to seat the snap ring.

I would not recommend doing this one yourself unless you have someone who has done it before and has the tools and experience to accomplish this.  Also, it is much easier if the column is left in the car...it gives you a stable column to work on, rather than trying to secure it in a vise or on a bench.

As far as the part goes, our company sells the part (it is in stock) and we can certainly ship one to you if you would like ot orde one.  I am enclosing a picture of the part and a link to our website for your viewing. Please click on the "Contact Us" page to order your part.
