Motorcycle Repair: Exhaust, tubing benders, exhaust leaks

Question
Hi
This question is about an atv exhaust but its a pretty general question.  Ther is a big gap in my exhaust where the pipe meets the silencer. The silencer opening is quit a bit bigger than the pipe is and this results in blow by. I was just wondering what the best way to fix it would be. Maybe an exhaust clamp or a reducer. If this is the case could you please give me the link to a site that sells clamps and reducers for atvs/motorcylces.

Answer
Nic... if this is the stock exhaust system and the packing has blown out, then go the dealer and get the appropriate sized exhaust packing to fit the gap. Many Hondas have thick packing insulation between the header pipes and muffler inlets. You just have to take your parts to a dealer so they can go through their inventory to see what will fit.

If you have been trying to fit something that isn't designed for the machine, then you have to make it up as you go. Try NAPA for clamps and or reducers, depending on the diameter. Most of their stuff is automotive, though, so try your local muffler shop where tubing benders are available and they can probably make up what you need, if it is that special. Or check with your local welding shop to see what they can whip up for you. I don't know about websites that offer clamps and reducers for ATVs. That really isn't how you put an exhaust system together that really functions properly.

A fully sealed exhaust system will generally give better performance and have less backfiring, than one with any kind of exhaust leaks, anywhere from the cylinder head to the end of the muffler.
