Steering Column Repair: loose steering column, jeep comanche, exact job

Question
I have an '89 Jeep Comanche (6 cyl 4.0 2wd ) with a loose steering column. It seems to be loose in the same area as the tilt lever. Also around the same time as the steering column came loose I lost power to the radio intermittently, lost the dash lights and lost the running lights ( head lights and brake lights still work ). Power to the radio has returned but not the dash lights or running lights. One last thing , I've had the truck 3 months and since I've owned it the radio would cut out if I used the dimmer switch at all.

Answer

ignition switch
Hi Felix:
It sounds to me like you have 2 problems.  They are not related and although they are actually occurring at the same time now, they developed independently.
The loose tilt portion has most likely been getting worse over time (a few months).  This is very common and can be corrected by diassembling the upper half of your steering column.
Our website has video on how to do this exact job.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply fill out an order form on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally

The second problem you are describing sounds like a bad ignition switch, which is mounted on top of the steering column tube under the dash about knee height.  You will need to lower the column to see and replace this switch, but very often they begin to melt internally and will cause the electrical problems you are having.  I am enclosing a picture of the part and you can most likely get it at any parts store for under $20
Good luck
