I have a 1989 Chev 20 van with tilt steering wheel. Yesterday, suddenly, the whole steering assembly from the tilt back to the wheel has become very loose and wobbly.

What might have happened, and is it still safe to drive

Thanks

Hi Brooke:
Sorry to hear of your probelm.
When you say suddenly, I need to ask if it was slightly loose before this occurrence.  Very often, the columns are loose for along time due to bolts coming loose inside.  After enough time the bolt(s) just falls out and there is nothing holding it in anymore....that's dangerous, but it can be fixed if you get to it fast...if you wait and keep driving, you risk the possibility of bending linkage rods and having the car shut off on you unexpectedly.
If it was fairly snug for a long time & this even occurred, then there is a good possibility the steering column main tube has snapped.  This cannot be fixed and runs the same risks as above.
Either way, it sounds like you need to have it attended to immediately.
Take a look at the videos on our website if you want to attempt repairing it yourself.
