Steering Column Repair: 1991 Chevrolet Suburban 1/2 Ton wiper switch replacement, windshield wash, chevrolet suburban

Question
The wiper switch, in my suburban, broke. When I went to turn it on it was stuck and then something snapped in side and it turned freely but would not activate my wipers. I can use my windshield wash to activate the wipers but only for the normal short duration. I started to disassemble the steering wheel and got down as far as the wiper switch and I can't figure out how to do the rest, also the shaft attached to the hand control seems to be turning. Would this mean the hand control is good and the part inside the column is broken. Thank-you for any help you can give me. I have a Haynes Manual but I lent it out and can't get a hold of the guy, so any diagrams would be helpful too, thanks

Hi Mike:
It sounds like the internal portion of the wiper switch is broken.  The shaft (or handle with or without cruise) actually pulls straight out and is reused with the new wiper switch.  rotate it while pulling as well as while inserting.  To replace the wiper switch you will need to remove the upper lock cover.  It comes out through the bottom after the lock cover is in your hand.  I have attached a picture of the wiper switch.  Also, we have just finished a website page with video on how to replace steering column parts.
If you would like to purchase the switch from us (if you can't find one) just send us an email through our website & let them know you were referred to from this site.
