Steering Column Repair: Steering Column Locking Plate Replacement?, turn signal switch, upper shaft

Question
I have a 1983 Chevy K10 Pickup with tilt steering, and the wheel won't lock when I take the key out of the ignition. Upon further investigation, I found the locking plate stripped of it's splines. Do you know where I can find a replacement?

Hi Dan
It sounds like you may need both the locking plate and the uper shaft.  We stock both pieces and can certainly ship them to you.  The costs are listed below.
In order to replace the locking plate, you will need a spring plate compressor (hand tool).  That's fairly easy t do.   compress the plate, remove the snap ring and then the plate iwll come off.  It is designed to gon on in one position only.
If the shaft is bad also, you will need to go much lower to replace it.  The turn signal switch, the upper lock cover and ignition lock need to come off, and the tilt housing all also have to come off and then you can remove the upper shaft.  When you remove the shaft, make sure to note the position of the notch for centering the steering wheel.  You will need to install the replacement in the same position.

Without a pivot pin puller, you will not be able to get the tilt housing off, so make sure yo have the tools needed before you start this project.

The parts yo will need are:
Locking plate....7837171 Lock Plate List price $21.27... your cost $15.00
