Steering Column Repair: Steering column repair, tilt mechanism, steering wheel

My 85 Monte Carlo Steering wheel has Loosened in the area of the tilt mech,and I watched the shifter and the turn sigs changed sides, it shut of the car I can shift the car out of gear and still turn the wheels is this repairable with kit or replacement of the whole thing is what I have to do.

Hi Rob:
You have been driving with it loose for quite some time.  The tilt mechanism is fastened with 4 bolts (about 2 1/2" long).  As they loosen up, the tilt becomes loose and wobbly.  If you go long enough the bolts actually fall out and then there is nothing connecting the upper half of the column to the lower half (except for wires and small linkage rods).  It's those rods that turn the car on and off and hold the shifter in place.  Now that you have actually twisted the column 180 degrees, all of those rods are bent pretty good and will need to be replaced.  
You are now looking at a steering column overhaul for about $300.  We can certainly handle that for you if you wanted to UPS it to us (through our website address at stolenandrecovered.com) or you can try and find a good used column to replace it with.
