Steering Column Repair: steering column, chevy silverado, sterring wheel

Question
I have A 1992 chevy silverado with tilt wheel, I've notice
when I put the truck into park that the column turns or twist about a half inch. The sterring wheel is tight with no play up or down. How would I go about tighting that up?

Answer
Hello Lee,
What you are experiencing is the tilt mount on the column tube being loose. You would need to disassemble the upper column to get at the 4 bolts that clamps the tilt mechanism to the column.
You are lucky at the moment in that you noticed the movement. Many columns deteriorate to the point of no attachment which causes the column to wobble in your hand.

One note: I recommend that regardless of who disassembles the column, they take the bolts out one at a time and use threadlock on the threads (and not simply tighten the bolts). Otherwise you could be doing it over within a year.
I hope that helps.
Have a great day!
