Steering Column Repair: 97 GMC Cant Shift out of Park, sierra 4x4, gmc sierra

Question

Hi Jay,
Could I get a little more clarification, please? Is the BTSI located under the dash by the shift or is it on the transmission itself? I suspect under the dash as I can hear it clicking when I press the brake pedal.

If it is under the dash, how do I reach it? Do I just have to take off the cover around the steering column or the whole lower dash?

Is there an "emergency bypass"? There is a little rubber door on the right side of the steering column. Is this related to what I am trying to do?

Sorry for so many questions.. Don't want to take a lot of needless stuff off the truck.

Thanks.. Tim

Hi Jay,
I have a 1997 GMC Sierra 4x4 with auto trans. Shifter on the column.
I went to move the truck today and could not get it out of park. Brake lites do work.

Tried and tried this afternoon, no luck.
Just went out now to check if the solenoid was working and could hear it clicking when I had the ignition "on" and pressed the brake. I pressed the brake about 10 times and then it let me shift.

2 questions:
First question: Is there an emergency release so I can shift out of park if, lets say, the battery is dead and it needs a tow?
Second question, does the interlock need to be adjusted and if so what is the procedure?

I looked in my copy of Chiltons but they seem to be ignoring the brake/transmission interlock.

Thanks Tim

Hello Tim,
The BTSI Brake Transmission Shift Interlock is located on the transmission shift linkage. I have seen these come loose and cause the problem you are describing. You'll have to crawl underneath to get at it.
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!

Answer
I'm sorry Tim, I just re-read what I wrote and I wasn't very clear. You will find the BTSI on the side of the transmission. The clicking you hear in the column is telling me the control module is working, but the lock isn't. The lock keeps the tranmission shift shaft from moving. I've found a common occurrence is the bolts holding the lock solenoid can come loose thereby not unlocking when the brake is depressed.

Have a great day!
