Question
When going into the steering column, what about the factory passlock/security system. Last year we were in a nightmare when my headlights went out. We determined it was the wiring in the steering column. Went into the column, found burned wires, fixed them, put everything back, truck won't start.  The message center was showing "security". Don't know when, how, or why this happened. Didn't know there was a factory security in my truck and we've had it since 2002. My dealership said I would have to tow the truck to them to have the security reset???? We left the truck with a reputable mechanic close to where we were working on in and in a couple of days he told us to pick up the truck. It was fixed. I don't want to go thru that again but here we are needing to go back into the steering column. Again, we have no idea what set of the security system before. Help?

Answer
Hi Karen:

You don't say why you need to go back into the electrical portion of the steering column and it really doesn't change the answer, but I can offer you this information about your security system.  If you attempt to start the truck without the key (using a screwdriver in the hole where the lock is), you will trigger the system again.  If you are going to work on your truck, I suggest you disconnect the battery before beginning.  If yo need the battery hooked up because your problem is electrical, then I can refer you to our company website for instruction on how to reset they system if you do happen to trigger it again.
We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to reprogram the ignition switch on GM vehicles (for a small fee).  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions. Here is a link to that page.  This covers many of the switches from 1997-2006 to present.
