Steering Column Repair: ignition switch linkage 91 GMC 1500 tilt wheel, tilt wheel, side pins

Question
Mr. Cooney;
I have a 1991 GMC 1500 ext. cab with a tilt wheel column. The tilt wheel assembly came apart.  I pulled the wheel and removed the locking plate with a tool, carefullt removed the switch assy. and pulled the side pins. Lifted off the collar with the tilt lever pulled. fixed the bolts and reassembled the parts. The ignition switch linkage inside the tilt joint will NOT stay together. I have realigned it 3 timed and when key is turned to the off position the linkage falls out of the slide.

Answer
Hello Mr. Shellhammer,
I know exactly what you are talking about. A little trick I use is to affix a piece of soft foam weatherstrip inside the column to  hold the linkage at proper alignment. This weatherstrip has a sticky side that should hold it in place. Don't use the sticky side on the linkage. The column originally had one inside, but it probably withered away from age. You may have seen remanants when you took it apart.

I hope that helps.
Have a great day!
