Steering Column Repair: tilt steering wont stay locked in place on 88 silverado, chevy silverado, salvage yard

Question
Hello,

I have an 88 chevy silverado and the tilt steering won't stay locked down where I want it to. It will lock in to the top couple of notches but not the lower one. I would appreicate any help on how to reapair this. The steering collumn feels great and doesn't seem loose at all.

Thanks,

Harley

Answer
Hello Harley,
Your tilt locking shoe has probably broken the lower half. If this happens, you're probably better off finding another used or rebuilt column to replace your unit. To repair that unit, you would have to find a salvage yard to sell the part you need. Some prefer to only sell the column as a whole. Thats besides the time it's going to take to remove the used part, and then disassemble your column to replace it. It is very time consuming.
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
