Steering Column Repair: Steering Column Rubbing Noise, pontiac sunfire, 2000 pontiac sunfire

Question
I have a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire with 76,000 miles.  When I turn the steering wheel i hear a rubbing sound from underneath near where the gas pedal is located.  Regular mechanics can't figure it out. It's at the dealer right now. Any ideas.  There is no problem with the steering just bad noise. Worse on sharp turns like into parking spaces, etc.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Donna,
I suspect your steering rack is defective and or worn out. You are probably hearing the pressure from the power steering fluid rushing past the seals inside the rack.

I would suggest taking it to a competent mechanic and have them test the pressures on the power steering system.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
