Steering Column Repair: ignition switch, coil wire, checy

Question
When i start my 1991 checy caprice the key gets locked up, so it wont turn back, cant get car out of gear, so i have to pull coil wire to shut car off.I assume its the ignition switch. Is it hard to replace, do i need any special tools.

Answer
Hello JP,
Yes, it is probably your ignition lock assembly. You will need two tools to get to the ignition lock. First you will need a steering wheel puller. Don't try to use a big hammer to pound the wheel off because you will damage the tilt coupler and possibly the steering shaft.
The second tool you will need is the lock plate compressor. This is to compress the spring to allow you to remove the small clip holding it on the shaft.
Here is a picture of the tools you will need to rebuild the complete column. At the upper left of the table are the lock plate compressor tool and the steering wheel puller.
I hope that helps.
Have a great day!
