Steering Column Repair: Ignition switch replacement, tilt wheel, pot metal

Question
Hi, I have an ignition switch that will not lock in place on an 78 Olds Delta 88 tilt wheel. The old switch was out about an 1/4 inch and then would slip out altogether. Switch was broken at the base. I purchased a replacement OE style switch to install but it will not stay in.  The switch assmbly slides in and out freely.  There does not appear to be any broken pieces inside the "hole".  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer
Hello Cipriano,
I am assuming you are talking about the key lock assembly not locking in the hole. That particular lock assembly has a lock tab toward the inserted end. There isn't much "meat" in these pot metal columns where the clip is to catch. It's possible enough metal has worn away or it became beveled to the point it no longer secures the assembly in place. Check too that the new lock isn't missing the locking tab.
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
