Steering Column Repair: 69 gto ignition switch, rod alignment, tilt column, floor shift

Question
69 gto with tilt column.floor shift.the cover  piece that mounts below steering lock rotates apporx 1/4-1/3 turn.I took off the steering lock piece.and found what appears to be missing a piece that holds the ignition rod in place.now the car does start.but the cust states that sometimes when turning the car would shut off.i'm thinking that the loose column piece is bumping the rod and turning off car.what and how does the rod stay in place?

Answer
Hello Joe,
You're right on the money. That piece that is turning also aligns the rod. When it moves, the rod becomes misaligned and can cause the ignition to turn off. You'll need to find out why the bowl is moving.
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
