Steering Column Repair: 1998 buick regal- how to change shift lever, turn signal switch, don ciccone

Question
Hello Jay- Thanks for helping. Are there any referances on the internet or books that you can recommend that will give me an illustraion or step by step instructions on removing components in order to get to the multifunction switch or turn signal switch, whichever it is called? I'm sure I can just start taking things apart, but usually it's easier if I know what I'm in for. I most always do my own auto repairs, but have never pulled a steering wheel. I've looked at all the chiltons, motors, and other books in our main library and not a one mentions anything about getting to that switch.

thanks
Don Ciccone

Question -
Hello-
The drivers side brake light on my 1998 buick regal has stopped working. However, the turn signal & 4-way flasher on that side do work and they use the same light filiment as the brake. I have tested and found that there is a readable 12 volts at the brake light terminal when no light is in the socket, but with the light installed there is no readable voltage when the brake is applied. I suspect a bad connection or contact and have traced the problem to the last terminal strip under the dash, coming from the turn signal lever, which is a yellow wire. I have looked at every library book I can find and have reviewed the wiring diagrams that show the brake wires going through contacts in the turn signal switch. But I cannot find any details on the steps necessary to remove the mechanism. I have instructions on disabling the air bag and have removed the lower plastic shroud that covers the turn signal switch on the steering column, but one of the screws is under a metal plate which looks like I need to remove everything above to get at it. The car has cruise control, if that matters. Any other thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Don

Answer -
Hello Don,
You are correct in that you will need to remove everything to get to the last screw. Once you get that far you will be able to access the turn signal assembly. As I've mentioned in previous other replies, it is best if you purchase or rent a lockplate compressor to get past it to access the switches. They can be found at most major auto parts stores.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!

Answer
Hello Don,
Unfortunately I do not have materials that I can upload for you. The best advice I can give you is to try the library for a Chiltons Manual. Many libraries are going to electronic Chiltons, at no cost, so give your local library a call to see if they have the hardcopy or electronic versions available.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.
Have a great day!
