Steering Column Repair: firebird stuck in park, pinion shaft, rear axle

Thanks for the quick answer.
I have never worked on a trans.  How hard is it to remove the linkage.  Is it something I can do and is it readily accessable. I am handy.

Question -
Have a 1989 firebird automatic trans that I need to move (tow).  Once before the ignition tumbler assembly failed. Myself and a buddy took the column apart and fixed the assembly. The car started fine. I do not want remove the assembly again since I am planning on towing the vehicle to its grave. I just need to move the car.  The key turns but the car won't start. The car is stuck in park because I can not start it.  

Is there a way to manually shift to neutral without starting the car?

You can remove the linkage at the transmission to shift it into neutral or remove the driveshaft.

It is not very hard to remove the linkage from the transmission. Most of the time the linkage simply snaps into place. Do not attempt this unless you have secured the car from rolling when it is placed out of park. The Firebird is rather tight to get at the linkage. You may want to consider removing the driveshaft at the rear axle. There are 4 bolts that can be removed and the u-joints will pull away from the pinion shaft, and the front simply slides off the shaft in the transmission. You are then ready to tow it.
