Steering Column Repair: 1987 Astro Power Steering Problem, astro van, rattling sound

Question
Hi,

The power steering fluid in my 87 Astro van started leaking really really bad, and it was making a rattling sound.  My neighbor replaced the pressure hose and said the problem was fixed.  However when I left in it this morning, I could see that it is still leaking PS fluid... but not leaking very much at all.

My concern is the rattling noise continues -- even though there is plenty of PS fluid.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Answer
Hello Yvonne,
It could be the the pump has been damaged by the loss of fluid. Have a mechanic check the pressure from the pump. This will narrow down the the noise problem. As for the leak, it could be a sign of a rack problem. But a good mechanic will check and note leaks prior to the pressure test.
Hope that helps. I know neighbors can attempt repairs, but unless they are properly equipped and do it on a regular basis, you may be asking for trouble trying to save a few dollars by helping a neighbor make a few. I'm not saying your neighbor is a bad mechanic. I am saying we're all human and can make mistakes. Ask if he will take another look at it and give you options. Then take it to a shop and get an estimate. You will then have done your homework and can make an informed decision as to what you can do.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
