Steering Column Repair: 1991 s10 blazer tilt column replacement, wheel drive vehicles, s10 blazer

Question
Im going to need to replace my steering column. When i bought the vehicle i never had to use a key to start it but rather use a screwdriver inside the left side of the column. now its become a tangled metal mess inside.

Its a column shift tilt for a 91 s10 blazer.

I was wondering if you could give a rundown of a step by step of how to  remove it from my vehicle (and the one ill be getting from the junkyard) and any special tips on installing the newer one.

any help here would be great.

thanks,
Brian Shepherd

Answer
Hello Brian,
Most column removals are not as hard as they sound and are much easier for rear wheel drive vehicles than front wheel drive.

In order:
Under hood:
Disconnect battery
Remove coupling bolt(s)
Disconnect shift arm

Under dash:
Remove small bolts holding column boot to floor
Remove nuts/bolts securing column to dash holding it in place.
Remove shift indicator link/wire
Disconnect all wiring making note of locations

This is a condensed version for all general column removals. The Chevy pickup is relatively straight-forward as listed in order.

Hope that helps.
Have a great day!
