Steering Column Repair: 91 S10 column adjustment ?, nuts and bolts, crash damage

Question
The column in the '91 is secure and all the bolts are in the cross brace...  The outer two bolts (the ones secureing the column to the dash support are snug...  They are all adjusted in the slots all the way towards the back of the cab...  This is really the crux of the question...  Is there any way to adjust the column back?  I loosened the outer two bolts, but the column wouldn't move any back towards the dash...  Is the collapsable section before the firewall?  I could swear that the collapsable section on my 1969 Suburban was behind the firewall and I was able to adjust it back and forth a couple of inches...  That's what I'd like to do here as the column sits quite a ways back from the dash...  I'm sorry if I didn't explain it clearly the first time...  As best I can tell, the S10 has not suffered any crash damage and is in good shape - just has a very long steering column...

Thanx!

Question -
I just aquired ("If you want it, take it!") a 1991 S10 truck (striaght, clean, not wrecked) where the steering column seems to be adjusted all the way toward the back of the cab (looking under the dash, the two slotted brackets are all the way to the far side)...  The wheel is approx 6" back from the edge of the guage cluster...  On my 1969 suburban, the column would slide back and forth (with some effort) if those two support bracket nuts were loosened up... However on the 91 the column resists even pretty heavy pressure even when it's loose enough to permit easy side to side movement... Are there additional attachment points or are these newer columns not able to be adjusted?

Hello Ian,
Check for cracked welds either on the column mount or the mounting brackets under the dash. There are two nuts holding the column bracket to the dash bracket. The dash bracket has several nuts and bolts securing it's position. If the dash was ever out, it's possible some of the bolts were left out.
Hope that helps,
Have a great day!

Answer
Hello again Ian,
I think I understand now. You want to get the column to the lower end of the mounting holes. Try unclamping the lower boot. The outer shaft should be of a DD style and should have an inch or so of play either in or out. It's located on the outside of the firewall. I believe the clamp bolt is located on the top side of the column on the inside.
Hope that helps.
Have a great day!~
