I am trying to rebuild a 1964 Chevy Chevelle tilt automatic steering column and am having trouble getting things apart.  I have the 1964 factory service manual but can't find anything in it that addresses the tilt steering column disassembly.  I have removed the steering wheel and upper bearing and cancel cam.  The shift, tilt and turn signal levers have all been removed and the lower bearing have been removed.  I cannot get the steering shaft out nor can I get the upper tilt mechanism apart.  What do I need to do to proceded from here?  I am rebuilding this because there is movement in the tilt mechanism.  The steering shaft is tight with no play but I get both side to side and up and down play in the tilt mechanism.  I would appreciate any help that you can give me.

Thanks
Duane

Hi Duane,
I'm trying to work off of memory here. Do you know if this was the Saginaw tilt column or not? If we can identify the tilt unit I might have a link to a diagram.

Jay,

I don't believe it is the Saginaw.  The only markings that I can find on it are stamped on the tilt housing.

DELCO REMY
DR-2-63
037    1 4

Are there any particular characterisitcs about the Saginaw that would help me identify it?  The 64 Chevelle has the ignition in the dash.  From what I can find th GM P/N is 5679550 RPO M35.  The directional switch is mounted on the lower end of the column under the dash and there is a cable that runs up to the cancel cam.  The only wires running up through the column are for the horn and gear indicator lamp.

Thanks for the help.
Duane

Answer
I'm sorry Duane but I can't find a reference to the part numbers you have shown. The RPO M35 tells me this is a Muncie part (I believe). That doesn't mean there isn't information available. I'm afraid I'm not of much help but if anyone else might have some info on this problem we'd love to have you share with us.  I'll check with a few other friends I have.
Have a great day!
