Steering Column Repair: Honda steering rack and pinnion, honda passport, car crash

Question
What are the chances that the rack and pinion of my 99 Honda passport needs to be replaced in a period of 16 months?
How do I know if they (dealer)replaced if the first time? They claimed the rack and pinion they installed in my Honda came without any kind of warranty. The mechanic that replaced it this time claims the damaged is in the gear box and it could be a car crash os something like that and I don't even have a parking ticket.

this is grazzy what kind of shop is this if it was a damged gear box . why did they not tell you it should be changed from the start . and u know what they installed the rack knowing this and they must warerntery the rack  thats the law and they know it . You tell them to make this repair wright .
