Steering Column Repair: steering gear., gmc pickup, salvage yard

Question
I have a 1984 1/2 ton gmc pickup. 305 engine with pwer steering. it is leaking fluid at the top of the gear where the steering column shaft enters into the gear. can this seal be replaced easily or do i need to buy a remanufactured one?

Answer
You would do yourself a huge favor by simply replacing it with a remanufactured unit. Usually when a seal goes on the steering box, it's a sign there are other problems that caused the seal to fail.
If it's an old work truck you might be able to find one at a salvage yard, but beware there is no guarantee that this part will last. Remanufactured units are readily available at most major auto parts stores for under $200. Shop around for the best deal.

Hope that helps. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
