Steering Column Repair: 2001 buick la saber loose steering wheel, steering wheel, air bag

Question
I think the nut holding the wheel to the column is loose. Will I have any problem with the air bag ? If I start taking the wheel apart can i get to the nut without the air bag going off in my face? Anything speical I need to know before I start? Do I need to disconnect the battery ? Thanks...

Answer
Always disconnect the battery whenever you work on a column, bagged or not. Disconnecting the battery will disable the air bag in most cases. Don't pry on anything with any great force. If the bag won't remove from the steering wheel easily, look for more bolts or screws holding it on.
You should be able to get to the nut once you remove the bag. I would check this immediately because if the nut were to fall off, the steering wheel will pull off the shaft. Trying to align the wheel back on the shaft while going down the road will be catastrophic.
If the nut is tight my bet would be a bearing problem. Don't tighten it so tight the threads get damaged. If it was loose, check the shaft and nut for damaged threads.

Getting to the nut is relatively simple.I hope that answers your questions.
Have a great day and Happy Easter!
