Steering Column Repair: Steering wheel locking, steering wheel, problem thanks

QUESTION: When the ign key is initially turned to the on position the steering wheel turns freely and is disengaged from tires. Is this normal and if not what is the problem?

Even without knowing the year, make or model of your vehicle, I can tell you this is not right.  But tell me what kind of car or truck we're working on & I may be able to help you determine the problem

Hi Rod:
No, there is a serious problem inside the steering column and it should certainly not do that.  
There is nothing specific about that car that leads me to any conclusion.  I would take it to a shop and just show them the situation without leaving it.  Most likely they will suggest a new (used) column or be able to see exactly what is happening.
