Steering Column Repair: Ign switch linkage kaput, ford windstar, ford steering

Question
Hi Rob:
On 98 Ford Windstar linkage between lock cylinder and ignition switch (about a foot lower on the column) apparently is fried.  I've heard there's a little plastic pin that allows the steering column to articulate that either breaks or falls out.  I've just been manipulating the ignition switch by hand but this isn't a great feature for prospective buyers.  Ford dealer wants $500-$800.  I've got exploded diagram from nice Ford parts counter guy, but can't see getting into it using only that.  Any ideas.

Answer
Hi,

I am not quite sure as to what you are referring to if the problem is electrical or mechanical. On a guess from past experiences it may be a problem with either the sector gear or the ignition actuator rod.
If the dealer is talking $500-$800 for repair, my suggestion would be get a used column and put that in. This would save you headaches and massive cost.
If you get a used column and it comes with a key for the ignition, the ignition lock can be swapped by putting the ignition on, depressing the pin on the bottom of the column under cylinder and pull it out. Put yours back in by inserting in the housing, pushing in and rotating to lock. If the outer shrouds are the wrong color, swap them as well.
Make sure when steering column is pulled at junk yard, steering wheel is centered and wheel is locked with no key in lock. This prevents the steering wheel from turning and breaking the coil on the air bag clock spring.
Ford steering columns are not easy to repair and the costs are insane for labor. Good Luck!
