Steering Column Repair: new ignition key does not work, saab 9000, new keys

Question
Hi Rob,

I lost my key to my '93 Saab 9000 CSE. I ordered 3 new keys from the dealer, which they made up from the VIN number. The new keys all work perfectly in all the locks, but none work in the ignition (it's a stick shift). I have tried wiggling them, as well as holding the wheel to remove tension from the steering lock, all to no avail. I also tried spraying WD40 in, with no luck. The new keys go in, but do not turn. Do you have any suggestions?

Simon

Answer
Hi,

Without seeing what you have, my guess would be one of two things. One that the doors are coded different than the ignition lock. This could be caused by previous service to the ignition lock where the VIN will not work in making an additional key. A locksmith would have to look at the original to determine if the key cuts are different from what your VIN says the vehicle is equipped with for an ignition lock.
The other possibility is that a cut from these keys is missing, where it will unlock the doors and the trunk, but will not work the ignition.
