Question -
a friend of mine is installing a new ignition switch in his car and i live 300 miles away and im unable to get to him for help and i was woundering if u have an exploded view of a 92 buick regal column with tilt steering?
Answer -
Hi,

Are you changing the ignition switch or the ignition key/lock cylinder?

its the key/lock cylinder he said it broke or striped or somthing and he has to replace it. i was a little confused myself on the ignition switch as he keeps saying but he is talking about the key/lock cylinder. he said his repair manual said to take it to the dealer. so as a follow up question would be ...is can it be done without taking it to the dealer and if so can u give me a rundown on it and a exploded digram if possible.thanks

Answer
Hi,

The most common problem with these is a broken rack or sector which the ignition lock operates when turned and yes, if you have never done these repairs, you are much better going to a dealer because not only do you need the knowledge, but specialty tools.
I just fixed a column yesterday. The ignition lock turned and nothing happened. In this case, replacement of the ignition lock would have no effect. The column had a broken rack which required total column tear down to replace the broken rack that pulls on the ignition actuator rod to start the engine.
I find that 99% of these problems have nothing to do with the ignition lock and the repair is far more complecated.
