Subaru Repair: 91 Loyale FWD - Ignition Coil, warranty worth, power transistor

Question
Driving my Loyale and suddenly dies.  Towed to a shop, and was told that it MAY be the ignition coil and and a power transistor.
Almost $250 to replace the coil which is what they will try first and if not they will need to put on the coil AND ignitor(?).
I was looking around and see that the ignition coil is a $29 part....Does this sound like a rip-off?  Could it be the coil that went bad?  The Loyale has 89,000 miles......what do you think?

Answer
Ken,

I'm just not sure what you are looking for here.  I cant diagnose it from here, if the shop doesn't know what is wrong, take it somewhere else.

As far as price, I don't know, $250.00 probably includes parts and labor, with a mark up included in the parts price, that is how the business works, a shop buys the part, marks it up just like everyone else that sells retail does, installs the part and offers a parts and labor warranty, hence the reason for the parts mark up.

If you buy the $29.00 dollar part and install it and it doesn't work, or fails in 6 months you will have a warranty worth $29.99, if a shop installs a coil for $250.00 you will have a $250.00 warranty including parts and labor and maybe a tow bill.  There are probably 20 different coils out there and 20 different prices, I hate the term "rip off" with out any FACTS such as is the written estimate for $250.00 for parts, labor and diagnoses, what kind of part is it, is the $29.00 dollar coil made in China? is it of the same quality as the one the shop is going to use, why doesn't the shop have a clear answer to the coil being good or faulty is a very simple test for a pro.

If you own a car you need to have a regular place you take it, a place you have a relationship with preferably someone who really knows your car.  That way if something happens you know who to take it to.  Most have a regular doctor, dentist, vet, hair dresser etc, you need to have a regular place to tale your car, even if its just to call and talk to if your car is broken somewhere else.
